Our Story

Cultivating Faith That Builds, Serves, and Endures Since 1887

[History compiled by church member Lola Patnoude in 2012.  Sources includ  previously-written histories, church newsletters, pastors’ reports, and  her memory.]

Beginnings: Unity and Foundation (Pre-1887–1887)

Before 1887, a group of Methodists worshipped in the Baptist Church, one of two church buildings in Breckenridge. On June 3, 1887, the First Methodist Church was officially organized. Two lots were purchased for $250 on North Fifth Street at Mendenhall Avenue (where Bremer Bank now stands), and the first wood frame church was completed and dedicated on November 13, 1887.

Building a Community (1887–Early 1900s)

The Sunday School was organized in 1887, marking the start of a strong Christian education tradition. That same year, the Ladies Aid Society (now United Methodist Women) was established, initiating projects and providing vital financial and social support. The first quarterly Church Conference was held in February 1888, with various officers elected. In 1898, the Young People’s Society (now United Methodist Youth Fellowship) presented the church with its large bronze bell, which has been used in all three church buildings.

Growth and Expansion (1903–1926)

In 1903, a third adjacent lot was purchased and a parsonage was added, reflecting the congregation’s growing needs and commitment to its pastoral leadership. Music became an increasingly important part of church life, with the introduction of a portable pump organ, a piano, and the formation of various choirs and musical groups.

A New Era: The Red Brick Church (1926–1974)

After 39 years, the original wood frame church was replaced by a large red brick building on the same downtown location. Construction began in 1926, and the new church was consecrated on November 10, 1929. It served the congregation for 45 years, with the last service held in July 1974.

Planning for the Future (1967–1974)

In January 1967, the congregation purchased 3½ acres for its future home. A parsonage was built in 1956, moved to its current site in 1974, and a detached garage was added soon after. Groundbreaking for the current church building took place in April 1974. During construction, the congregation worshipped in the Masonic Temple (now the Wilkin County Historical Building) for six months.

The Modern Church Home (1975–Present)

On January 27, 1975, the congregation moved into its new church, with the first services held on February 2. The building was consecrated in March 1975 and dedicated in October 1991 after the mortgage was paid off early. Since then, the church has seen numerous improvements, including new roofs, siding, parking lots, sidewalks, landscaping, and updated furnishings.

Community Engagement and Legacy

The church has remained a vital part of the community, hosting events like the annual fall bazaar (over 40 years), serving as a distribution point during the 1997 flood, and supporting programs like “Lend a Helping Hand.” Since 1995, the church has presented an annual Christmas cantata for the community, and since 2005, it has hosted the Twin Town ecumenical Lenten breakfasts and services. Many community organizations continue to use the church as a meeting place.

Gratitude and Vision

The congregation gives thanks for its members, officers, and all who have served over the years and our church looks forward to continuing the “Endless Line of Splendor” begun by its founders, striving for unity, service, and faithful witness in the community.
